Who knew 24-year-old Hashmitha Selvam would grow up to be one of Malaysia’s up-and-coming multilingual vocalists? Hailing from one of Malaysia’s rich cultural heritage states, Hashmitha continues to thrive in the music industry.
"My parents said I began humming nursery rhymes about the time I was 11 months old. I used to hum along as I listened to music. I started singing when I was two years old since I could pronounce and understand words,” she reveals.
She then began belting out cover songs of her favorite singers and singing at family gatherings. Fast-forward to 2009, when rock and pop music started to become universal hit songs, Hashmitha had the honor of performing on Astro Tamil.
Four years later, the adventurer herself released her first Tamil song, "Indru Vaazhnthidalaam" (Let Love Take Over), which spoke of love and peace, as well as attracting over 33K views.
Her musical career doesn't end there; in 2016, she was named the "Youngest Indian Artist" and earned the Best Vocal Performance for AIM Malaysian Indian Award. She was also featured in the Malaysian Book of Records 2016.
Being an outgoing introvert she is, Hashmitha never shy away from opportunities like singing Nirmala in front of Dato' Sri Siti Nurhaliza. She captioned her Instagram photo with, “I’m so very honored and humbled to have sung Nirmala to the singer herself Dato’ Siti.”
She is in awe of the vocal prowess of the likes of pop king Harry Styles, AR Rahman, and iconic singer Michael Jackson. "AR Rahman is one of the greatest singers in the Tamil industry, and I've been a fan of Michael Jackson since I was young.
“When it comes to singing, I’m versatile. But, if you asked me which genre of music I favored, I'd answer jazz and pop, though I listen to all kinds of music,” she shares.
Being one of the few Indian vocalists in Malaysia, Hashmitha is steadily building her name. You would shiver from the intensity and heavenly of her voice. She performed songs in English, Bahasa Melayu, and Tamil.
Three years ago, she released her single, "Takkan Kembali," which has received more than 578K views. Positive feedback flooded in the comment section, praising her beautiful voice and melodious singing.
The bop song "Online Love," sung by Santesh with Sabesh Manmathan and Hashmitha herself, was released six months ago. “I’m not the mastermind of the song, but it was Santesh who created and planned the song.
"He invited me over to sing the song's female lead. Working with Abang Santesh and Sabesh is fun and flexible. I was able to be myself and felt at ease," she remarked.
Despite being content with her blossoming singing career, she also doesn't like to focus on just one thing. She's expected to start working at a law firm in January after graduating from law school last year.
“Singing is my passion, but I also love law. My second sister is taking law too, so we have plans to open up a law firm together,” confides her.
Her singing talent was never in doubt. Currently, she's blessed with career opportunities in acting (Kalluri Rascals) and taking projects at XENO Entertainment. Check out her latest cover song by clicking this link.
